Service for checking dry matter distribution Challenger

20-11-2018

This year HZPC offers Challenger growers a service to measure the dry matter distribution in their lots with a Hyper Spectral Camera. Based on this distribution an estimate is made of the risk of quality reduction later in the storage season. The camera technique is available free of charge for every Challenger grower.

Cause

The summer of 2018 was even drier and warmer than in 2017 and again experienced strong regrowth at the end of the season. Therefore there is a chance that a problem with internal discoloration may occur again during the storage this season.

During the 2017 storage season, quality reduction in the form of internal discoloration was found in various lots Challenger. Research showed that the extreme weather conditions, and in particular the explosive growth of Challenger at the end of the growing season, made that the transport and storage of dry matter in the tuber could not take place in the normal way. There was a lot of dry matter accumulation in the cortex (exterior potato) and a disrupted / blocked transport of dry matter to the pit (interior potato). Lots with a high dry matter gradient (difference between cortex and pit) are clearly more receptive to quality reduction later in the storage season.

Advice

We advise growers of Challenger to send in samples of lots that you have doubts about for research with the Hyper Spectral Camera. This provides insight into the extent to which there is a risk of discoloration during storage. With the results, growers and processors can discuss a timely processing to reduce risks. Certainly this season everyone benefits from the timely processing of all lots.

In the meantime, like with other varieties, it comes down to being alert during storage. Provide a dry product by ventilating frequently (dry) as long as necessary. Only when there is no longer any danger of moisture, rot or any water bags, cool down to a target temperature of 8 degrees Celsius. During storage, ensure regular ventilation and sufficient internal ventilation. HZPC also advises to regularly check the lots. Cut a number of tubers per lot every two weeks and regularly have a baking sample taken by your customer.

Practical information submit samples

Samples can only be handled if provided with a correct label. For these labels and instructions, you can contact the Processing department +31 (0) 513-489920.
Control with Hyper Spectral Camera is free for growers of Challenger, with the exception of shipping costs.

Send 50 tubers per lot in a non-airtight bag, with a specific label to:
